NSW Moves on Prior Sectors rather than Skilled Occupation Lists

To better respond to changing skills shortages, the New South Wales (NSW) government has announced it will stop publishing specific ANZSCO unit groups in exchange for focusing on sectors rather than lists of occupations. This new adjustment is one further simplified attempt at organizing the state's immigration strategy and defining target sectors that need skilled professionals.

What's Changing?

Previously, NSW issued a list of eligible ANZSCO unit groups for skilled migration. Lists will now focus on priority sectors that are more closely aligned with the skills shortages in the state from today forward.

NSW Target Sectors:

The priority sectors for the program year are:

  • Health
  • Education
  • Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
  • Infrastructure
  • Agriculture

Even though EOIs submitted in priority fields would take priority, also assess high-ranked EOIs submitted from other fields. Nonetheless, because it is in high demand and has limited spots, applicants are encouraged to consider all other migration options available to them except for the NSW nomination.

 Skilled Invitation Rounds

There are rounds of Invitations which play a crucial role in the NSW nomination process. These include:

  • Dates of invitation rounds: It will be conducted throughout the financial year but will not be determined or announced in advance.
  • Criteria of selection: NSW shall at its discretion also consider points score, English language proficiency, and skilled work experience. EOIs submitted in the identified priority sectors will receive priority.
  • Invitation to apply: The NSW Government has full discretion regarding who will be invited to apply for nomination.
  • Date of submission or amendment:The date of lodgement or revision of an EOI in SkillSelect shall not impact the prospects of an invitation being received.

NSW will invite rounds for the Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190) this week.

Supporting Regional Development

New South Wales continues with its commitment to regional development: the state will focus on the attraction of skilled talent to regional areas through its regional skilled migration program. The reopening details of the program and finalized applications from previous years are yet to be announced.
