What's the New Rule for the Remote Workers in Canada, June 2026?

Yogesh shukla

The Canada Immigration rules for those who want to travel to the country while working on their computers are about to change. Those traveling can take their laptops with them, these travelers are often called "digital nomads". The Canadian immigration department issued new guidelines on 26th May, 2026. From now on a much tighter scrutiny will be in place for travelers before entry.

What is a Digital Nomad?

For some, a digital nomad is someone who can work from anywhere in the world as long as they have an internet connection and a computer. They could be working for a multinational company as an employee or be self employed as a freelancer (an independent business operator serving other organizations as customers).

According to Canadian law, these workers can come to Canada as regular visitors (like tourists). They can stay in Canada and work remotely for up to six months at a time without requiring a special Canadian work permit, since they aren't displacing Canadian workers-their income originates outside Canada.

What Were the Old Rules?

Prior to this change, it was very easy for digital nomads to access a visit to Canada. The government reassured border guards that they need not require any additional documentation from these "tele-workers". If a traveler claimed to be temporarily residing in Canada while working remotely for a company in their home country, border guards usually granted entry.

What Are the New, Stricter Rules?

The government has ended the "easy entry" policy. They want to be able to check on people that may be at the wrong end of the stick.

Now, digital nomads must bring official proof and paperwork to the border. They have to prove two major things to the officers:

  • Origin of their money: They will have to show that the entirety of their earnings is derived from outside of Canada.

  • Who they work for: If they work with a business they will have to show that it is a foreign business. If they work alone they will have to show that none of their customers are in Canada.

If a traveler turns up at the airport and has no papers-such as a work contract, bank statement, or an official letter from their boss-their entry to the country will be refused.

Other Important Details You Need to Know

The new rules also clarified a few other important points:

  • Remain for more time: If a digital nomad wishes to stay long in Canada. For more than 6 months, he/she will not be able to overstay in the country. He/she has to apply for one official extension called "visitor record".

  • No Local Jobs: The traveler needs to persuade the border officer that they definitely will never seek a local Canadian job during their time in Canada.

  • Family Members: If an individual traveler brings their family (husband, wife, children), then the family members do not have permission. Each family member must apply separately for their visitor status.

  • Moving to Canada-A Canadian Job: When a digital nomad living in Canada receives an unexpected offer of employment from a Canadian employer, the digital nomad may begin working-but only if an extremely narrow legal exception applies.

  • Some basic rules about Safety and Money: As any other tourist, you'll have to demonstrate that you have sufficient financial means to buy food and find a place to sleep. And you can't have a serious criminal record nor medical problems that would put Canadians in danger.

The reason behind this change.

By requiring additional paperwork, they will be able to determine if those who claim to be ‘remote workers’ are indeed who they say they are, and have no intentions of filling Canadian job positions.
