New Zealand has critically revised its immigration requirements by deciding to disallow at-home OET results for immigration applications from 13 th July 2026. As a result, regardless of the applicant, all those appearing for a New Zealand visa through OET must complete every component of the test in person at an authorized and continuously overseen testing centre.
The new requirement will be implemented from 12:01 am on July 12 2026 (New Zealand Standard Time), and from then on, the results of the online at-home language testing pathway will not be recognized for immigration purposes as evidence of English language ability. Applications for eligible visas using results from an at-home test completed on or before July 12 2026, will still be accepted.
Immigration New Zealand has explained that this change has been implemented to maintain the integrity of English language testing by ensuring the tests continue to remain secure, consistent and fair. Asking candidates to undertake their examination at one of the publicly supervised testing centers will help prevent identity fraud and ensure the integrity of the language tests used to support immigration applications.
The Occupational English Test (OET) is a popular examination among health professionals who intend to live and work in New Zealand. Many nurses, general practitioners, dentists, pharmacists and other health professionals have sat for this test.
The policy change impacts OET, the English language test preferred by many in the field of immigration. Starting from July 13, 2026, testing candidates who intend to sit the exam are required to visit an Accredited OET Examination Centre physically. The entire exam (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking) must be taken in a testing location.
Those candidates intending to take advantage of the convenience of having the test administered at home after the deadline will have to change their plans and arrange to take the supervised test. The Immigration authorities have recommended that those wishing to take the test this way leave plenty of time before they book.
The new rule does not affect the validity of any at-home OET tests already undertaken. Immigration New Zealand has advised that people who have already completed the at-home OET test prior to the deadline, if they wish, can continue to use the results when applying for immigration, as long as the results are still valid (as per current immigration requirements).
This transitional arrangement is designed to lessen the impact on applicants who were already registered to or had completed the online version prior to the implementation of the new policy.
This is especially important for international health professionals, many of whom use OET to showcase their English skills when seeking work visas or residency options in NZ.
With the trend of the country recruiting more qualified health care workers to fill the potential workforce gaps, the English language requirement is a must to be met in the immigration process. Applicants are encouraged to make sure they meet the reformed testing requirements to make a successful application.
If intending to seek New Zealand immigration, applicants should consider all test dates available through OET before applying. Applicants would have to book test appointments in advance and at an optimal time (especially if the applicant has an immigration deadline to meet).
It is also recommended that you confirm your OET centre is licensed for administering examinations and that all parts of the OET will be taken under supervision; partial online testing will not satisfy the visa application criteria after the date given.
This decision is part of the global trend towards strengthening verification requirements in language testing used in immigration services. With a single mandated method of supervised test administration, New Zealand will uphold the integrity of the visa application process by confidently and securely ensuring prospective migrants have passed an English test to a defined standard.
While the cessation of at-home OET testing may involve some pre-planning by applicants, immigration officials feel the change will reinforce the value of language testing and ensure the system remains strong. Prospective applicants migrating via healthcare and other relevant categories should take the opportunity to educate themselves on the rules and regulations well in advance of the new implementation date of 13 th July.
