US Introduces Priority Visa Interview Service for Tourists and Business Travelers.

This service will allow some travelers to pay an additional fee to schedule a visa interview more quickly. Certain applicants applying for a business or tourist visa will, starting on July 1, 2026, have the opportunity to pay $750 to receive priority scheduling of their visa interview at some U.S. embassies and consulates.

New Pilot Program Aims to Reduce Wait Times for B1/B2 Visa Applicants

The program is a limited pilot initiative launched by the U. S. Department of State and is scheduled to operate until 31 December 2026. According to government officials, the program aims to assess the general public demand for expedited appointment processing while facilitating the administration of the rising number of visa applications globally.

What Is the New Expedited Visa Interview Service?

As part of the new system, persons requesting a B1 (business) or B2 (tourism) nonimmigrant visa may opt to pay an additional fee for airmail. This payment entitles the applicant to a visa interview appointment within ten (10) business days, if available at the consular posts or offices of the honor receiver’s choice.

This new fee is completely separate from the established visa fees, is solely for expediting your interview appointment, and has nothing to do with the normal visa adjudication process, nor does it provide any greater likelihood of visa approval.

U.S. authorities said applicants who opt for the premium service will still be subject to the same background checks and security screenings as other visa applicants.

Who Is Eligible?

This priority appointment is only offered to applicants applying for B1/B2 visitor visas. B1/B2 visas are typically provided to those visiting friends or family, attending a conference or meeting, or otherwise coming to the United States for a short-term visit.

The service would be provided only at certain foreign diplomatic missions participating in the pilot program. A list of participating sites will be made available to the public by the U. S. Government in an official publication.

An additional advantage is that the applicant is not required to submit any special documentation or to indicate emergency circumstances to qualify for the premium appointment service. Simply paying the fee will establish the applicant's eligibility for further consideration under the fast-track program.

Faster Appointment, Not Faster Approval

The U.S. Department of State has advised that you are not assured of visa approval, even if you pay the extra $750.

Those applying through the program will still need to complete a consular interview and meet all legal criteria for visa issuance. Administrative processing, if required following the interview, will take place in the normal timeframe.

However, officials have explained that there is an additional fee to ‘upgrade’. This improves the turnaround time for booking appointments and, if applicable, increases the granularity of options for passport return after processing.

Why Is the US Introducing This Program?

He put the decision in the context of a record rise in worldwide visa applications, which has resulted in a backlog at several U.S. embassies and consulates. 

On average, it takes about a month for a visitor visa appointment, but at some centers the wait time still exceeds a year. Delay in booking appointments may prove problematic for travelers who need to travel on business trips or special occasions.

However, the State Department believes that other paid express services could be more flexible for travelers while reducing the responsibilities of embassy staff who must process hundreds of thousands of expedite requests each year.

The timing of the program also coincides with a period when the United States is gearing up to host multiple international spectacles such as the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Olympics/Paralympics in Los Angeles. Officials anticipate the need for more visitor visas from other countries.

Existing Free Expedited Options Will Remain

Even as the new paid service is rolled out, the US government has assured that existing emergency appointment routes will still be available.

Applicants can also submit an expedited request for interviews in certain situations, such as emergencies due to humanitarian reasons, urgent medical treatment, and travel that is beneficial to U.S. interests. Government officials and diplomatic personnel still have the means to facilitate expedited appointments upon referral and consideration of the national interest, as needed.

These options should be available for the duration of the pilot.

Impact on Regular Visa Applicants

There is some concern that the new initiative’s premium appointments may result in longer waiting times for other applicants.

In response, the State Department claims the Cap on expedite appointments will be a small amount of the total interview capacity at participating locations. Officials felt this action would lessen the blow to normal appointment availability.

The department claims that the pilot may, in the long run, increase efficiency by reducing the need for multiple expedite requests requiring a consular officer's review.

A Test for Future Visa Services

The program will be a six-month trial to test travelers' willingness to pay for an expedited visa interview process. Information from the program will help U.S. officials decide whether to introduce additional premium services later.
