New CRS Bonus System May Benefit Candidates in Healthcare, STEM, Trades and Management Fields
Canada's immigration system may soon give a considerable boost to skilled workers in the country's top-paying jobs. Canada's Express Entry program is considering a "high-wage occupation factor" that would give extra CRS points to skilled workers working in occupations with wages well above the median.
If implemented, the reform, in the context of a wider restructuring of Canada's economic immigration programs, might be another avenue for the top end of the labor force (knowledge professionals) to secure an ITA (Letter of Invitation) for permanent residency.
Based on existing projections, an additional 37 jobs already emphasized in Express Entry's category-based selection (CBS) framework may benefit from the new high-wage element.
The proposal suggests that bonus CRS points will be awarded to jobs based on the ratio of the median wage in a given occupation to the median wage in Canada as a whole.
Using Statistics Canada's reported median hourly wage of $30.77 for 2025, the government has outlined three wage-based tiers:
Wage Tier | Qualification Threshold |
Tier 1 | Professions where the income averages two or more times the median wage of the country. |
Tier 2 | High-paying jobs that pay, at minimum, 1.5 times the median wage |
Tier 3 | Professional positions with a median wage 1.3 fold the national median wage |
In contrast to the normal reliance on an employment-based criterion in an eligibility system, eligibility would be based on a median wage from the Job Bank rather than a person's actual wage or a job offer.
Some of the healthcare and executive management occupations are under the category your candidate may qualify under 7, listed at the top of the page, that may receive the larger BCP.
Occupations Paying at Least Twice the National Median Wage
Occupation | Express Entry Category | Median Hourly Wage |
Architecture and Science Managers | STEM | $62.56 |
General Practitioners and Family Physicians | Healthcare & Physicians Category | $111.64 |
Nurse Practitioners | Healthcare | $61.54 |
Senior Managers (Financial, Communications and Business Services) | Senior Managers | $96.15 |
Specialists in Clinical and Laboratory Medicine | Healthcare & Physicians Category | $149.66 |
Specialists in Surgery | Healthcare & Physicians Category | $201.52 |
This category features a significant number of medical professionals, indicating that the country currently has a preference for doctors and nurses.
Another set of jobs is regulated at 1.5* median wage and thus it would fall under this criterion. This career group spans a very varied range of technical, engineering, and healthcare occupations.
Occupations Paying at Least 1.5 Times the National Median Wage
Occupation | Category | Median Hourly Wage |
Air Pilots and Flight Engineers | Transport | $52.00 |
Civil Engineers | STEM | $48.56 |
Canadian Armed Forces Officers | Skilled Military Recruits | $55.03 |
Construction Managers | Trade | $48.72 |
Oil and Gas Drilling Supervisors | Trade | $50.00 |
Cybersecurity Specialists | STEM | $49.52 |
Dentists | Healthcare | $52.88 |
Electrical and Electronics Engineers | STEM | $50.67 |
Geological Engineers | STEM | $49.81 |
Pharmacists | Healthcare | $55.49 |
Psychologists | Healthcare | $52.88 |
University Professors and Lecturers | Researchers Category | $58.89 |
Veterinarians | Healthcare | $60.00 |
Canada's added focus on recruiting both cybersecurity specialists and engineers underscores Canada's ongoing emphasis on bringing these types of high-demand skill-sets to the country to encourage innovation and economic growth.
The third level of wage includes multiple professions for which we already have category-based draws, especially in the healthcare and education sectors.
Occupations Paying at Least 1.3 Times the National Median Wage
Occupation | Category | Median Hourly Wage |
Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists | Healthcare | $46.15 |
Dental Hygienists and Dental Therapists | Healthcare | $45.00 |
Dietitians and Nutritionists | Healthcare | $41.63 |
Elementary School Teachers | Education | $43.27 |
Industrial and Manufacturing Engineers | STEM | $44.23 |
Industrial Electricians | Trade | $42.00 |
Mechanical Engineers | STEM | $45.67 |
Medical Sonographers | Healthcare | $42.00 |
Occupational Therapists | Healthcare | $46.00 |
Physiotherapists | Healthcare | $46.15 |
Registered Nurses | Healthcare | $43.27 |
Secondary School Teachers | Education | $45.67 |
Senior Managers (Construction, Transportation and Utilities) | Senior Managers | $46.04 |
These factors are already responding to the category-dependent selection, and might be even more competitive if the high-wage factor were taken into consideration.
Candidate pool-selection based on categories is currently among the most important features of Canada's Express Entry program. Rather than relying exclusively on total CRS scores to invite candidates, the IRCC is conducting skills-specific draws for workers in priority categories.
Currently, nine occupation-focused categories exist:
Healthcare and Social Services
STEM
Trades
Education
Transport
Physicians with Canadian Work Experience
Senior Managers with Canadian Work Experience
Researchers with Canadian Work Experience
Skilled Military Recruits
Candidates typically require at least 1 year of relevant work experience within the past 3 years.
Although the proposal has now been confirmed by Canadian immigration authorities, no official launch date has been provided. The high-wage element is one aspect of a broader set of reforms to the program. Changes include adjustment of the CRS points criteria and stream eligibility.
Officials have said the modernization process will take 12 to 18 months. Other key changes, such as the high-wage occupation factor, have been said to potentially be implemented a little earlier.
If enacted as proposed, the new system may open doors to thousands of highly skilled workers, especially those in careers such as advanced health care, engineering, or information technology, who meet Canada's immediate labor market demands.
