Who can expect faster processing times for Canada Immigration 2026.

Yogesh shukla

Canada unveils new processing times for immigration applications, bringing positive news for several economic permanent residence (PR) categories. The updated information on processing times indicates a positive trend for a few economic immigration categories. The new processing time data provides clearer perspectives on the processing progress of AIP, PNP, and Quebec Business Class.

Atlantic Immigration Program Records Significant Improvement

The Atlantic Immigration Program had the most significant decrease in processing times of all economic dockets.

AIP applicants: The anticipated wait has decreased from an estimated 38 months in the last report to 26 months. This is a 12-month decrease and a notable improvement in recent times.

However, processing times remain well above the program's service standard of 11 months. The immigration authorities currently have around 12,900 AIP applications awaiting processing.

These enhancements should aid the foreign workers and employers who will use the region's immigration programs to gain permanent residence. Part of the objective of the northern immigration programs is to fill shortages in the region's labor force and promote economic development.

Provincial Nominee Program Processing Speeds Up

The Provincial Nominee Program recipients were also given great news as the processing times in both of the two largest categories decreased.

  • Express Entry attracted greater PNP applications and now contributes fully to the processing times for Express Entry applicants, which are now averaging at approximately six months, a reduction from seven months at the previous update.

  • The processing time for base PNP applications that are not contributing to Express Entry has decreased from 14 months to 13 months.

The service standard continues to be 6 months for enhanced applications and 11 months for base applications.

However, there is still a substantial backlog.

  • About 14,000 of the improved applications are yet to be examined.

  • More than 110,000 of the basic applications are still awaiting assessment.

By decreasing the wait times, it may allow provinces to continue to attract highly skilled workers needed to fill labor shortages in various sectors.

Quebec Business Class Applicants See Progress

The Quebec immigration programs have met with mixed success in the latest update.

Application processing times for applications made under Quebec's Skilled Worker Selection Program did not change from 11 months, as this remains the standard service.

In the Quebec Business Class category, applicants experienced slightly positive changes. Processing time went from 78 months to 76 months, a seemingly insignificant change that still remains longer than many other Canadian permanent residence categories.

The current stock of applications awaiting the assessment process includes:

  • Approximately 24,800 applications under the Skilled Worker Selection Program.

  • Approximately 3,700 applications under the Quebec Business Class category.

Express Entry Processing Remains Stable

Regardless of whether applicants apply through Canada's premier Express Entry program, processing times stay the same as last time.

Processing estimates remain at:

  • 7 months for applications under the Canadian Experience Class (CEC).

  • 7 months for applications under the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP).

These numbers are still within the six-month service standard that IRCC hopes to provide for the overwhelming majority of Express Entry applications.

At present:

  • About 60,900 Canadian Experience Class applications are being processed.

  • About 52,000 Federal Skilled Worker Program applications are currently in inventory.

No processing estimate was published for the Federal Skilled Trades Program due to insufficient data.

Start-Up Visa and Self-Employed Programs Continue to Face Delays

Although many of the economic streams have made advances, some programs still face significant backlogs.

For those applying under the Start-Up Visa Program and the Federal Self-Employed Persons Program, estimated waiting times are still over 10 years.

Both applications are still on hold, and no updated service standards have been advised by the authorities.

Application inventories remain substantial:

  • Approximately 46,600 Start-Up Visa applications.

  • Approximately 8,100 Federal Self-Employed applications.

Family Sponsorship Wait Times Increase

In contrast to the economic streams, the wait times for the majority of the family sponsorship programs increased in 2026.

Spouse or Common-Law Partner Sponsorship

Processing times for spouses or common-law partners living in Canada now take:

  • 26 months outside Quebec.

  • 32 months within Quebec.

Both figures increased by one month from the previous update.

For spouses or partners living outside Canada:

  • Processing remains 16 months outside Quebec.

  • Processing increased to 33 months within Quebec.

Parents and Grandparents Program

The Parents and Grandparents Program was the only family category to show improvement.

  • Processing outside Quebec decreased from 33 months to 32 months.

  • Processing within Quebec increased to 67 months.

Thousands of sponsorship applications continue to remain in inventory across all categories.

Citizenship Applications Remain Unchanged

No changes were observed in the estimated processing times for citizenship applications.

Current processing estimates include:

  • Citizenship grants: 13 months.

  • Renunciation of citizenship: 7 months.

  • Searches of citizenship records: 17 months.

A total of more than 326,000 citizenship grant applications are currently awaiting processing, reflecting a slight increase compared to the previous report.

The citizenship grant service standard remains 12 months.

Conclusion

Immigration processing times continue to evolve as application volumes and government priorities change. The June 2026 update brings encouraging news for many economic immigration applicants, particularly those applying through the Atlantic Immigration Program, Provincial Nominee Program, and Quebec Business Class.

While several economic streams are seeing faster processing, family sponsorship categories continue to face longer wait times, and some business immigration programs remain burdened by substantial backlogs. As Canada adjusts its immigration system, applicants should continue monitoring updated processing estimates and ensure their applications are complete to avoid unnecessary delays.
