Update on the Australia Skilled Immigration invitation in 2026.

Yogesh shukla

Good news for the Applicants planning for Australian Immigration, especially in key sectors, including healthcare and information and communication technology (ICT).

In the first quarter of the 2025-2026 General Skilled Migration program, Australia conducted the first skilled migration invitation round. Inviting a total of 445 potential migrants. If you are planning to immigrate and are an expert in any of the sectors, then this is the perfect time to apply.

Strong Start to the New Quarter

The most recent round, which was released at the end of April 9, is a significant milestone in the migration plan of the state for the year. Out of 445 invitations that were made, 245 invitations were made to the holders of the Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190). Whereas 200 invitations were made under the Skilled Work Regional visa (subclass 491).

Subclass 190 visa offers a clear-cut path to permanent residence.  Hence, it is very appealing to skilled migrants as they are willing to settle permanently in Australia. On the contrary, the subclass 491 visa obligates the recipients to reside and work in the specified regional locations for at least three years before they can qualify for permanent residency.

This even spread is indicative of the two-fold attention that South Australia pays to fulfilling immediate workforce needs and, at the same time, stimulating regional population development.

Priority Sectors Continue to Dominate

Healthcare professionals, as in the past rounds, were the highest-priority group, with 79 invitations. The persistence of demand suggests the persistent pressure in hospitals, aged-care services, and the health systems in general.

The engineering and transport professionals were next in line, with 72 invitations being issued. These are vital roles in terms of infrastructure development and logistic activities, which are important in the economic growth of the state.

ICT experts received 38 invitations, and it is another indicator of how digital transformation and technological innovation are vital in the future workforce planning in South Australia.

State officials stressed that these areas will probably continue to be the center of attention in further rounds, as shortages will be the same and the demand will only grow.

Implications for Employers and HR Teams

The most recent statistics are rich with information for employers in South Australia. Industries with acute labour shortages, especially the healthcare providers, aged-care facilities, and infrastructure projects, will have their nomination approvals accelerated in case they are on priority occupation lists.

To HR Forams, the regular monthly rounding allows them to plan strategically on how recruitment organizations can synchronize recruitment campaigns and invitation cycles, which enhances their likelihood of getting skilled international talent.

Also, the focus on regional migration under the subclass 491 visa provides new opportunities for businesses outside metropolitan regions to attract and retain skilled employees.

Guidance for Prospective Migrants

Migration professionals are encouraging applicants to make sure that their Expressions of Interest (EOIs) are updated. Even a slight modification, like new employment information or a better score in English language skills, can make a huge difference in the ranking of a candidate in the SkillSelect system.

As competition rises in the mainstream jobs, the candidates are advised to enhance their profiles where they can. Potential employment, pertinent work experience, or established connections to the region can be a competitive advantage.

The other important suggestion is to make preparations beforehand. After an invitation has been issued, there is generally a time limit of 14 days wherein a complete application must be received. This involves police clearances, skills tests, and other corroborating documents, which may be time-consuming to acquire.

Role of Migration Support Services

The process of skilled migration in Australia can be complicated, especially due to the documentation process and rigid schedules. With the help of established consultants, providing document pre-screening, deadline management, and courier services to simplify applications.

This kind of support may be particularly useful when it comes to individual applicants and corporate HR departments that have to deal with numerous cases at a time.

Looking Ahead to the Next Round

The subsequent invitation round should occur at the beginning of May, and the state will keep its usual monthly schedule. The competition among applicants is expected to increase even more, as South Australia approaches its yearly quota.
