New Zealand has started the initiative to improve the Permanent residency experience forapplicants. A major change will be implemented in August 2026 in the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) Resident Visa. This will help retain the skilled workers across the country. The Visa change will help immigrants to get their permanent residency with ease and efficiency.

If you are looking to boost your international career and get betteroppurtunity then this is the right time to plan for your PR under the following Visa category. As New Zealand faces a shortage of skills, Indians with the skills can easily grab the opportunity. To know more, contact Aptech Visa

Below is a complete breakdown of the changes, how they benefit migrants, and why this matters significantly to Indian applicants hoping to make New Zealand their new home.

Two New Residence Pathways Under the Skilled Migrant Category

New Zealand has introduced two specialised PR pathways that recognise the importance of both skilled experience and trades expertise.

1. Skilled Work Experience Pathway

This pathway focuses on migrants in skilled roles (ANZSCO skill levels 1–3) who have demonstrated sustained experience.

Eligibility requirements include:

  • At least 5 years of directly relevant skilled work experience, and

  • At least 2 years of New Zealand work experience, earning 1.1 times the median wage.

This pathway strongly favours workers who have already adapted to New Zealand’s workplace culture and demonstrated long-term value.

2. Trades and Technician Pathway

This pathway is ideal for migrants in key trades and technical roles.

Eligibility requirements include:

  • A Level 4 or higher qualification,

  • At least 4 years of post-qualification experience, and

  • At least 18 months of New Zealand experience paid at or above the median wage.

A detailed list of eligible trades and technician occupations will be released soon.

Summary of Key Changes: Current SMC vs New SMC Settings

To help applicants understand the shift, the government provided a comparison between the current and new settings.
