Open Work Permit has been extended till 31st December 2026. The following permit comes under Temporary Residency. This news can change the immigration and Permanent residency plans for many.

This is good news for those who have been waiting since 2021 to get Permanent residency in Canada. This announcement supports those who have not received the PR status, but they can continue working in Canada without interruption.

This policy is applicable to the family members as well, who are residing in Canada or outside Canada, as long as the principal applicant meets the criteria and has applied for an OWP.

What Does This Extension Mean for Applicants?

The extended public policy allows eligible TR to PR applicants to:

  • Maintain their temporary resident status in Canada

  • Continue working for any employer and in any occupation while they wait for their PR results

  • Apply for an open work permit until December 31, 2026

Who Can Apply for the Open Work Permit?

  1.  Have applied under one of the TR to PR pathways and received confirmation of successful submission

  2. Be authorized to work at the time of the PR application.

  3. Have met the language requirements of their chosen TR to PR stream at the time of submission

Hold a valid temporary resident status, maintain status, or be eligible to restore their status.

Family members can also apply if:

  • They are a spouse, common-law partner, or dependent child (18+)

  • They apply online

  • The principal applicant has applied and qualifies for this OW.P

  • They have a valid status in Canada or are eligible for restoration.

When Can You Apply?

  • If you currently have a valid work permit, you can apply up to 4 months before it expires.

  • Other applicants, including family members, may apply at any time if they have maintained status or are eligible to restore status.

How to Apply for the OWP

Applicants must apply online; applications at the port of entry are not allowed.

Steps include:

1.) Preparing the required documents and a scanner/camera

2.) Paying the applicable fee, only the work permit processing fee of CAD $155 (OWP holder fee is exempt)

3.) Creating or signing into an online IRCC account

4.) Completing the eligibility questionnaire to generate a document checklist

5.) Filling out the work permit form with special instructions:
