With day-by-day stricter rules for immigration, the UK has rolled out tougher English language proficiency for all immigrations that will be held. If you are planning to immigrate to the UK, this news is what you need to know.
On Oct 14th, 2025, the UK authorities have decided that the new immigration will have a mandatory requirement of a level of proficiency in the Secure English Language Test (SELT), which includes all 4 skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing English.
This new change significantly requires English proficiency higher than the previous standard, and applies to multiple visa categories, including students, skilled workers, healthcare professionals, High Potential Individuals (HPI), and Innovator Founders.
The approved SELT providers include:
Pearson
PSI Services (UK) Ltd
IELTS SELT Consortium
LANGUAGECERT
The test results will be electronically verified by the UK Home Office during the application process to prevent fraud or misrepresentation.
Speaking on the policy, UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said the change reflects the government’s renewed focus on integration and contribution from migrants:
“This country has always welcomed those who come here to contribute. But it is unacceptable for migrants to come without learning our language or being unable to participate in our national life.
If you come to this country, you must learn our language and play your part.”
International Students must now achieve A-level proficiency to qualify for UK university admissions and student visas.
Healthcare Workers, including Nurses, doctors, and care professionals under the Skilled Worker visa, must have higher language standards for professional licensing and communication.
Individuals under the Skilled Worker and Innovator Founder routes.
Applicants from top global universities will also need to prove A-level English skills to secure entry.
For Indian applicants, this rule will mean stricter conditions and potentially higher preparation costs. But with a perfect plan and preparations, this can be achieved very easily.
Indian students aspiring to study in the UK must now aim for an A-level or equivalent English standard, a level above the current B2 threshold used by many universities.
Similarly, Indian healthcare professionals and IT specialists applying under the Skilled Worker route will need to meet the enhanced SELT requirement before lodging their visa applications.
While many Indian candidates already meet strong English standards, this policy will require formal certification from Home Office-approved testing agencies, even if they’ve previously studied in English-medium institutions.
Strengthen language-based integration;
Reduce dependence on post-arrival English training;
Curb the number of low-skilled migrants; and
Ensure that visa holders can fully participate in work, study, and community life from day one.
