The year 2023 was another significant and tough year for Immigration New Zealand and the immigration system. It was their first complete year of open borders since 2019, and much was accomplished along the way.
The demand for visitor permits was unparalleled, with a record number of applications received for several months. They implemented new visas, including the:

  • The Recovery Visa to support in the clean-up after the devastation caused by Cyclone Gabrielle.
  • Skilled Migrant Category to support the country’s workforce.

The following are the notable achievements for the year 2023:
• Over one million visa decisions were made.

• The New Zealand border saw almost 11.5 million immigrants.

• The New Zealand employees on Border Patrol received over 3 million views.

• Sent 150 mass emails to approximately 3 million consumers and stakeholders, as well as 5 foreign marketing initiatives reaching 38 countries.

• Of the 519,400 visitor visa applications submitted, 81% were accepted.

• Over 1.4 million NZeTA were submitted, with 99.89% accepted.

• 15,749 employers gained accreditation through the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) policy.

• About 2.2 million manual identity comparisons were done.

• Approximately 2,000 AEWV post-accreditation checks were done.

• Over 79,000 AEWV applications were approved (88%).

• Of the 46,703 working holiday applications, 95% were approved. There were also 2,344 working holiday extension requests approved.

• 99% of 2021 Resident Visa applications were approved, achieving the goal of 80% processing 3 months ahead of schedule.

• 75% of the 90,067 student visa applications were approved.

• Over 18,400 Recognized Seasonal Employer applications were granted.

• 1,507 quota refugees were relocated to New Zealand.

• A total of 567 refugees were placed through the Refugee Family Support Category and 33 through the Community Organization Refugee Sponsorship Program.

• Over 40 amendment circulars were sent.
