Spouse Visa Australia Processing Time

Australian Immigration Department has set up different processing times for the visa categories and every program has its own processing time that varies according to the application to application. The individual circumstances of the applicants can hinder the actual Spouse Visa Australia Processing Time.

Some of the most common reasons due to which Australia Partner Visa Processing Time varies are:

  • The backlog of total applications received by the Australian Immigration Department
  • Submission of a completed application with all the required documents supporting claims
  • The speed of providing additional information
  • Time is taken to perform the necessary checks on the supporting information given
  • Time is taken to obtain additional information from outside sources that provide information on the character, health, and national security requirements
  • Total available places in the migration program
  • For citizenship applications, the time taken to attend a Citizenship Ceremony or receive a citizenship certificate

It is strongly advised to apply well in advance before your intended travel date to avoid any delays in travel arrangements until you have been granted the visa. On 23rd May 2019, the Australian Immigration Department published the visa processing times for the April 2019 applicants. About this, it will be important to note here that although the figures released by the department show the global averages for the first 75% and last 10%, the applications processing time for April 2019 took a lot lesser than those quoted.

The Spouse Visa Australia Processing Time for different categories is mentioned below:

Australia Subclass 309 Provisional (overseas) Visa:

This visa lets the de facto partner or spouse of an Australian citizen, Australian Permanent Resident or eligible New Zealand citizen live in Australia temporarily. As per the latest Department of Immigration and Border Protection, the processing time of Subclass 309 temporary visa is as follows:

  • 75 percent of applications are processed within 15 months
  • 90 percent of applications are processed within 20 months

Australia Subclass 100 Permanent (overseas) Visa:

This visa lets the de facto partner or spouse of an Australian citizen, Australian Permanent Resident or eligible New Zealand live in Australia permanently. It is granted to people who are the holders of temporary Partner Visa subclass 309. As per the latest Department of Immigration and Border Protection, the processing time of Subclass 100 is as follows:

  • 75% of applications are processed in 14 months
  • 90% of applications are processed in 21 months

Australia Partner Processing key Insights by the Immigration Department:

In 2008, the Spouse Visa Australia processing times took a matter of a week and in 2019 those same applications are taking on average months or years. The Australian immigration visa processing officers said that time and time again in the 11 years the applications are consistently finalized under six months.

The Department of Home Affairs global processing time tool provides general information about each specific visa subclass but it does not tell the information about processing office. The general processing times can vary significantly across different Department of Home Affair's offices.

In addition to this, those applications that take considerably longer processing times may be subjected to more detailing of the application and security/documentation checks. This may be a result of incomplete paperwork and/or documentation, missing files, incorrect/valid entries and applicants of certain countries where additional security checks are done.
