Canada announced to extend Post Graduate work permits (PGWPS) for up to 18 months more.
Starting April 6, 2023, the Canadian Immigration Minister announced 18 months extension of PGWPs. International graduates, Now have the opportunity or are eligible to apply for an additional or extended work permit to stay longer and gain additional work experience for up to 18 months.
Who can apply for PGWP Extension?
As of April 6th, 2023, international graduates whose current PGWP will expire in 2023 Or whose PGWP already expired between sept. 20, 2021 to Dec. 31, 2022, are eligible to apply for an extension of their PGWP status of up to 18 months.

Those international graduates with expired of their PGWPs will be able to restore their status, even if they are beyond the 90-day restoration period, and will receive an interim work authorization while awaiting the processing of their new work permit application.

You are eligible to apply for an Extension of Canada work permit from outside of Canada. if you have left Canada and returned after you have been approved. However, You may not apply for this work permit at a port of entry.

You don’t need to apply for a Canada work permit extension if your PGWP is going to expire in 2023. IRCC will send you to renew work permit at your mailing address. if you changed your mailing address you must contact IRCC.

What is PGWP and what is PGWP validity in Canada?
The validity of a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) in Canada depends on the length of the program of study completed by the international student.
- If the program of study is less than 8 months, the student is not eligible for a PGWP.
- If the program of study is between 8 months and 2 years, the PGWP will be issued for a period equal to the length of the program of study, up to a maximum of three years.
- If the program of study is two years or more, the PGWP will be issued for three years.
Who can apply for Post-Graduation Work Permit Program in Canada
International students who have completed a program of study at a designated learning institution (DLI) in Canada may be eligible to apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) in Canada.
To be eligible for a PGWP, the international student must meet the following criteria:
- Completed an eligible program of study at a DLI in Canada that was at least eight months in duration.
- Graduated from a public or private post-secondary institution, a college, a trade or technical school, or a university in Canada.
- Have a valid study permit when applying for the PGWP.
- Apply for the PGWP within 180 days of receiving written confirmation from their institution that they have met the requirements of their program of study and are eligible to graduate.
- Have no other legal reasons to stay in Canada after completing their studies.
- Have continuously maintained full-time status as a student in Canada during each academic session of the program of study.
International students who meet these criteria may apply for a PGWP, which will allow them to work in Canada for up to three years after graduation, depending on the length of their program of study. The PGWP program provides international students with valuable Canadian work experience, which can help them to qualify for permanent residency and ultimately contribute to the Canadian economy.
