The new Australia Immigration Program is released by the Department of Home Affairs with an upper limit of 160,000 for the year 2019/2020. The skilled invitation visas numbers have been slashed from 43,990 to 18,652. This means that around 870 invitations per round will be invited by the Australian government and most probably, the higher points will be needed and longer wait at each point level for all occupations.
The new cap of 160,000 permanent visas will be maintained for the next four years, said Immigration Minister of Australia.
The Australian Prime Minister, Scott Morrison on reducing the migration levels said, “Over the years we have been far more successful in bringing grater integrity in the assessment of applications and if that has resulted in a lower intake, then that only speaks to the rigour of the processes and we don’t propose to change the rigour of the processes.”
The Australia’s annual permanent migration planning level was consistent at 190,000 since 2011. The actual intake was almost in line with the planning levels until the last financial year when the intake fell to just over 162,000 for the first time since 2007-08.
The decline last year was primarily driven by a cut in skilled and family stream visas with the skilled visa approvals slashed by 12,000 and a 15 percent in family visas. In 2016-17, the immigration intake was 183,000 people.
The 2019-20 Migration Program Planning Levels for the Australia Visa Categories are as follows:
TOTAL SKILLED VISAS: 108,682
Family Total: 47,732
TOTAL VISA PROGRAMS: 160,000
