Minimum Wages Hike For International Students In Australia

The international students coming to Australia has surely gone up by 12% in 2018. The more number of overseas students are flocking the Australian universities and the trend is expected to rise in the coming years. The quarter of the overseas enrolments are filled up by the international students in the universities of Australia.

As per the Department of Education, the universities of Australia, private colleges and English Institutes have seen an enrollment of 542,054 students in comparison to 305,534 enrolments in the year 2012.

Seeing the rise in numbers, Australia is definitely one of the favourite destinations among students. The educational system in Australia is high-class and has state-of-the art universities that make it the perfect choice for students.

The students also prefer Australia because it gives the provision for students to apply for Post Study Work Permit. This gives an opportunity to students to work full-time after their studies are completed.

The students studying in Australia will now enjoy a hike of 3.5% in the base pay as quoted by The Fair Work Commission (FWC). The new national minimum wage is set at AUD $18.93 per hour or AUD $23.66 for casual workers.

The Australian government gives the same working rights to international students in the workplace. This is definitely good news for the students who are working in the Australian organizations.

The pay hike is applied to employees who are getting their base pay rates from:

  • The current national minimum wage
  • A registered agreement
  • A modern award

However, the increase will not affect employers who are already getting higher wages than the new minimum wages.
