Indians are the 3rd largest migrant group in Australia 2018

The recent data released by ABS shows that the Indian population in Australia has grown significantly in the last couple of years. As of June 2018, around 592,000 Indians called Australia their home. This was a 30% increase as compared to the census figures of 2016.

Indians are now on the third spot as the largest migrant group in Australia by putting behind New Zealand on the fourth spot. There are 568,000 New Zealanders in Australia. Indians now make up for 2.4% of the Australian Population. The data also revealed that the median age of Indian migrants is around 34 years.

As per the table we can see that England has been the largest source of Migrants for Australia in 2018 followed by China and then India. The Australian Immigration Department granted 162,417 Permanent Residence Visa in the year 2017-18 out of which 33,310 were given to Indians.

In the year 2016-17, 38,854 out of 183,608 PR visas were granted to Indians.

Not only permanent residents but there were also a record high set in 2018 for Indian students studying in Australia. As of November 2017, there were 70,000 Indian students in Australia, as quoted by SBS News.

In the 2016 Census it was also revealed that not only Indian population but Indian languages also had grown in Australia. Hindi topped the list with 159,652 speakers while Punjabi followed second with 132, 496 speakers.

The other languages saw a significant growth in Australia such as Tamil with 73,161 speakers and Bengali with 54,566 speakers. There were Malayalam 53,206 speakers followed by 52,888 Gujarati speakers, Telegu with 34,435 speakers and 13,055 Marathi speakers. There are other notable Indian languages in Australia as well like Konkani, Kashmiri, Oriya and Sindhi.
