Half yearly report: Changes in the SkillSelect Invitation 2018

There has been change in the SkillSelect invitation rounds this program year as opposed to last year. The previous year saw a lower number of invitations issued by the Australian Government whereas the immigration points to receive invitation continued to increase, this led to a high number of undecided SkillSelect applications. As this year goes by, we will see skilled migration programs being unfulfilled for a second year in a row.

The minimum required eligibility point to apply for Australia Skilled Independent visa subclass 189 remains at 60 points. However, the invitations are given on 75 points. An increase from 70 point to 75 points has been seen in recent months. This applies to all non-pro rata occupations. This further applies that applicants who were invited at 60 points, now require 75 points. All the occupations listed on Medium and Long Term Strategic Skill list are included in this.

Similarly, Family Sponsored Subclass 489 applicants are expected to reach 80 points to be able to get invitation from the Australian government.

Despite the high immigration points for Skilled Regional Nominated visa 489 visa, the invitations given are very low in number. Generally, only 5 invitations are given per round.

For Pro Rata Occupations, the following points are required to get invitation by the Australian government:

  • Accountants and Auditors, Company Secretaries and Corporate Treasures are invited with 80 points
  • ICT Business and System Analysts are invited with 75 points
  • Software and Application programmers are invited with 75 points
  • Electronics Engineer, Industrial, Mechanical and Production Engineers are invited with 75 points
  • Other engineering professionals with 75 points
  • Computer network professionals are invited with 75 points

Though, the immigration points required to get invitation are almost same for the occupations mentioned above, but please make sure that their waiting time may vary.

For example, both Accountants and Auditors are invited to apply with 80 points. However, the waiting time for Accountant is 21 weeks whereas for auditors it is over 18 weeks.

Similarly, IT professionals are invited with 75 points, but the processing time of engineering professionals vary, Computer Network Professionals takes at least 8 weeks, Engineers and Software takes around 12 weeks and so on.

For Australia Skilled Nominated Visa subclass 190, the chances are still better to receive ITA with 60 points but there are great options for those scoring points over 75. However, an applicant’s nominated occupation must be on the selected occupation list and additional criteria must be met for each state.

Below mentioned are the recent trends happening with Australia Skilled Nominated Visa under different states:

  • ACT approved 190 nominations but the invitations are given very slowly. The program is expected to re-open after 1 July 2018
  • NSW have increase their requirements for visa 489 and less number of invitations are given as compared to 190 NSW invitations. There are certain areas that are not approving further applications until after July 2018 but will continue to receive application to fill the pipeline for the next program year. The quota for this year has been already filled.
  • Northern Territory have issued more invitations under Australia 489 stream
  • South Australia is giving more invitations under 489 visa as compared to 190 nominations
  • Tasmania is equally sponsoring 489 and 190 applicants at the moment with occupation, study and residence requirements favourable to many applicants.
  • Victoria issued 190 nominations in huge numbers but has currently suspended the nominations until after July 2018 and has issued very less 489 nominations.
  • Western Australia has not issued single state nominations for 190 or 489 so far.
