Canada’s Parents and Grandparents Program aims to Accept 27,000 Applications

Canada’s Parents and Grandparents sponsorship program was briefly opened to expression of interest from eligible Canadian citizens and permanent residents after opening briefly on January 28. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) said it would accept 27,000 interest to sponsor forms on first in, first-served basis under Parents and Grandparents Program known as the PGP.

This form was only available for few minutes before IRCC announced that it had received enough submissions and ended the intake.

IRCC tweeted that the applicants who successfully submitted the interest to sponsor form will receive an email within 24 hours confirming receipt.

The Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) allows eligible Canadian citizens and permanent residents over the age of 18 to sponsor their parents and grandparents for Canadian Immigration. The submission of interest to sponsor form is not the required proof of status in Canada document but it is the mandatory starting point for those who wish to apply in the PGP.

To omit the chances of duplicate submissions, invitations to apply to the PGP will be issued in the order the interest to sponsor forms are received until IRCC reaches its 2019 target of 20,000 complete applications.

IRCC further adds that it might open the interest to sponsor form again in 2019 if it needs more potential sponsors.

If the applicants receive an invitation, they have 60 days to submit a complete application and all the necessary documentation.  In order to be considered complete, applications must adhere to the instructions. The processing time for PGP applicants if all the documents are submitted on time is currently 20 to 24 months.

If you submitted an interest to Sponsor form and receive confirmation but do not receive an invitation this year, IRCC says it will hold your application for 2020 consideration.

What is the Minimum Necessary Income?

A key eligibility requirement to sponsor parents or grandparents is that the potential sponsors provide proof that they have enough income to support all the family members including themselves, once they become a sponsor.

Well, this requirement is not asked at the interest to sponsor stage, potential sponsors who are invited to apply will have to provide notices of assessment from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).

The sponsors residing outside of the Canadian Province of Quebec must provide notices of assessment for each of the three taxation years immediately preceding the date of their application.

To check whether they meet the Minimum Necessary income requirement, interested sponsors must determine their family size. This particular requirement has to be maintained until the final decision is made on their PGP application.

The below mentioned table is applied for residents of all provinces except Quebec:

Total Number of Persons - First lineMinimum income required for the 3 taxation year- second line
2018201720162015
2 persons $40,379 $39,813 $39,372 $38,618
3 persons $49,641 $48,945 $48,404 $47,476
4 persons $60,271 $59,426 $58,768 $57,642

If more than 7 persons for each additional person add $8,740 $8,616 $8,521 $8,358

Sponsors who live in Quebec will have their income assessed by the Quebec’s Immigration Ministry based on the province’s income requirements.
