Canada's job vacancy in the private sector has reached another record in the first three months of 2019 with the highest number of unfilled jobs reported in Quebec, the Canadian Federation of Independent Business says in a new update.

A total of 435,000 jobs are vacant for at least four months across Canada during the first quarter of 2019, which amounted to a job vacancy rate of 3.3 percent. “The national vacancy rate has been steadily climbing for the past two years and it reached another record high last quarter,” said Tell Mallet, vice-president and chief economist of the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB).

The labour shortages affected skilled positions more than semi-or unskilled occupations.

Labour Shortages by Province

The Quebec province faced the highest labour shortage in the first quarter of 2019, with the job vacancy rate reaching 4.1 percent. The second province was British Columbia with a job vacancy rate of 3.6 percent and Ontario came third with a rate of 3.3 percent labour shortage.

Labour Shortages by Sector

There is some labour shortages sector wise where Canada’s construction industry faced a vacancy rate of 4.9 percent in the first quarter of 2019 followed by personal services at 4.7 percent.

Agriculture Business had a job vacancy rate of 3.8 percent and the hospitality sector had a rate of 3.7 percent.

A total of approximately 106, 500 jobs were added in April and another 27,700 jobs were added in May, and unemployment in the country is at its lowest point in more than 40 years.
