The Australian Government is trying every possible effort to increase the number of immigrants in regional areas. There is requirement of skilled workers in the regional areas to fill the job vacancies and ease the pressure on the major cities.
As per the data released by the Federal Government, 1 in 5 migrants who came to Australia between 2006 and 2011 chose to settle in the regional areas. However, Australia is still struggling to settle more migrants in the regional areas.
City VS Regions
Australia is most urbanized countries in the world with 67% of its population residing in the big cities. There are more migrants in urban areas than non-migrants, as per The Conversation. The two most important aspects of attracting migrants to regional areas are attraction and retention.
Thus, to attract skilled migrants to regional areas, two new visa categories will come into effect from November this year namely Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional Provisional Visa and Skilled Work Regional Provisional Visa.
The points that attract the retention of migrants in the regional areas are:
A survey was conducted on 915 skilled immigrants settled in the regional areas. The result states that 2/3RD of them liked their job and out of every second person out of three felt welcomed by the local community.
Most of them were also found to be happy with the surroundings like schools, medical services and entertainment options.
Regional areas for refugees:
The Australian government decided the primary location for refugees to settle in the country. There are many regional areas for refugees to settle:
The survey was conducted on 111 refugees who said that they found Australia to be safe. They felt that the locals were friendly towards them and their children had good future prospects in Australia.
The survey also found that most refugees had experience of running their own business before moving to Australia. Programs like ‘Ignite Small Business Startups’ helps refugees to build their own business.
