Australia Can In-House 900,000 More Migrants

Many blame immigration for booming Australia’s population that lead to congestion and expenditure of environmental resources. The people say Australian cities are becoming overcrowded and cannot sustain more people.

But, if Australia wants to cut down on immigration, it would also then make sense to introduce policies that limit number of international tourists and students.

Just like immigration, tourist’s numbers are also on rise in Australia. The number of international tourists increased from just over 4 million in 1997-98 to nearly 8 million in 2015-16. On the other hand, people who are entitled to permanent residence increased from 81,000 in 1998 to 1, 35,000 in 2016.

If Australia allows zero tourism then it could accommodate roughly 900,000 more migrants. As a comparison, Australia’s total migration intake is around 190,000 per year.

The data was calculated by the rough approximation of the amount of resources used to get an idea of the resources short-term visitors use in Australia. Their spending on goods and services were calculated.

The calculation was also done for the migrants spending same amount of money that gave rough indication of how many extra migrants could let into the country per drop in tourist numbers.

However, curbing tourism or immigration is not a sensible solution as tourists, international students and migrants all add positive value to Australia. ABS data for calculations were used:

  • the Amount of international tourists spend (including number of students staying less than a year) in Australia (A$ 33,917 million in 2015-16 from total spent in Australia (A$940, 822 million). The amount spent by Australian residents is only (A$906,905 million in 2015-16)
  • Average consumption of residents per capita was divided by the population (around 24 million in 2015-16). This came to A$ 37,680 million for every 1,000 people.
  • Total spend of international tourists by per capita income (per 1000 residents) spent by residents. This came to 900,213 in 2015-16
  • Similar calculations were also made for tourists assuming 10% and 20% consumption was more than migrants.

Both tourism and immigration cannot be cut in Australia as it has a positive impact on our economy. The research also shows that the immigration has a slightly positive effect on Australia’s employment rate and gross domestic product (GDP). A recent government report also shows that cutting Australia’s migration rate would cost the budget billion of dollars, lower living standards and reduce job growth.

No particular group should be blamed for reduced resources in Australia. There is no fault of tourism or migration in decreasing Australian resources.
