The province of Ontario has net employment gains in 2018 that saw Canada’s unemployment rate reach its lowest point score since 1976.

The Canadian unemployment rate of 5.6 percent was lowest since 1976

The number of people employed in Ontario grew by 78,000 over the course of 2018 for full-time employment while the province’s unemployment rate dropped 0.2 percentage points to 5.4 percent.

The Canadian Province with lowest unemployment rate in 2018 was British Columbia at 4.4 percent.  The new employers in BC grew by 44,000 in 2018 with most of them working full-time. Statistics Canada said BC’s employment growth rate of 1.8 percent was double the national average.

Saskatchewan national average was also outshined by the average employment growth in 2018 with 11,000 more employed in 2018- a growth rate of 1.9 percent. The province unemployment rate was also lessening by 0.9 percentage points to 5.6 percent.

This was on par with Canada’s unemployment rate of 5.6 percent in the year 2018. This rate is the lowest since 1976.

On the national level, the employment grew by 163,000 in 2018, a growth rate of 0.9 percent. The increase was entirely driven by gains in full-time work, as told by Statistics Canada.

Statistics Canada said these employment gains were recorded almost entirely in service industries. The health sector and social assistance had employment gains of 74,000 followed by business, building and other support services with 59,000.
