Indian Students Rejoice; Now Onwards There Is Faster Student Application Process

Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced a new direct stream for faster processing of Canada study permit applications. This is done to promote Canada as a destination choice for international students seeking quality education.

The Government of Canada introduced the Student Direct Stream (SDS) for the applicants applying from India, China, Vietnam and Philippines. Those students who are able to demonstrate that they have the financial resources and language proficiency to succeed academically in Canada will be able to apply for Student Direct Stream.

This program is a part of a wider initiative taken by the government to augment its international student program and to help more foreign students in starting their overseas studies sooner.

Earlier, there were separate IRCC programs for these 4 countries which are now aligned together to ensure uniformity into one Student Direct Stream.

To apply for SDS, applicants must first need to get a letter of acceptance from a Canadian Designated Learning Institution (DLI) along with a proof of tuition payment for the first year study at a DLI in Canada, purchase of a guaranteed investment certificate (GIC) valued at $10,000, Completion of an upfront medical examination, and language proficiency report (IELTS 6 bands for English, or a TEF 7 score for French), or graduation from a Canadian –curriculum high school.

Those applicants who are not able to meet the SDS requirements have an option to apply through the regular study permit application process.

SDS and Express Entry system compliments each other as the student applying through this program will be able to create a path to permanent residence and Canadian citizenship.

IRCC is also working on expanding SDS to Africa and looking for some options in Kenya and Senegal as well. Senegal expansion would more focus in to bring the French-speaking students to Canada.

IRCC is trying every possible way to improve its International Student Program by making its services simple, fast and accessible. SDS success will be monitored with an intention to expand the program in 2019 or not.
