Important Update: The programs for skilled and business migration for 2022–23 are now open.

The South Australian Government has released an updated skilled occupation list, describing the skills it intends to fill through international talent as well as migrants already living and working in South Australia, and the 2022–23 General Skilled Migration (GSM) program is now open.

The list is one of the most comprehensive in the country, and qualified immigrants, including our very outstanding overseas graduates, are eligible to apply for state nomination in more than 500 different professions.

With almost 470 occupations this year, up from 380 in 2021–2022, the number of occupations available to immigrants from outside has once again reached pre–COVID epidemic levels.

The 2022–23 Skilled Migration Program will give preference to

  1. Nominations for skilled migrants who have experience in fields that are in demand, such as health, information and communications technology (ICT), education, engineering, agribusiness, and trades, or
  2. Who can contribute their skills to fields that are developing, such as high-tech and digital, health and life sciences, green energy, defence, space, and cyber security.

The Safe Haven Enterprise visa (SHEV), which allows humanitarian migrants to enter South Australia, is also expected to benefit from more flexible routes to permanent residence.

The state's priority is to nominate both talented and experienced foreign migrants who can fill urgent shortages as well as migrants who are currently residing and working in South Australia—to retain those with in-demand talents.

State Nomination

To fill the skills gap in South Australia, the state government can propose highly qualified immigrants through state nomination.

State nomination can help skilled migrants qualify for a skilled migration visa from the Australian Government Department of Home Affairs by giving your visa application more points.

For state nomination, there are two skilled migration visa choices:

  1. State-nominated permanent visa for skilled immigrants, Skilled Nominated (Permanent) visa (Subclass 190), which enables you to live and work in South Australia. Learn more about the conditions for a Department of Home Affairs Subclass 190 visa.
  2. The State-nominated provisional visa for skilled migrants, the Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (Subclass 491), enables you to live and work in South Australia for up to five years and may open the door to permanent residency. Learn more about the conditions for a Department of Home Affairs Subclass 491 visa.

Check the Department of Home Affairs visa requirements, make sure your job is on the State Skilled Occupation List, and read up on each of South Australia's nomination streams to see whether you qualify before submitting an application for state nomination.

Please be aware that receiving a state nomination does not guarantee visa issuance. The Department of Home Affairs must evaluate your application in light of a number of visa-specific conditions. Only if all conditions are satisfied will you be given a visa.

Gains from State Nomination

Applying for state nomination in South Australia will give you the following benefits in addition to taking advantage of the wonderful lifestyle and employment options on offer:

  1. Having access to a variety of occupations
  2. Extra points for the 190 and 491 visas in the Department of Home Affairs points test.
  3. Priority processing of category 491 visa applications

Nomination Stream Options for Applicants:

There are several nomination streams available to applicants who want to live and work in South Australia as skilled migrants. Before submitting an application for state nomination, review each of the streams to determine your eligibility.

1. Graduates from South Australia

International graduates with degrees from South Australia may qualify for state nomination as skilled migrants earlier than other applicants. High-Performing Graduates may also profit from this stream's concessions or waivers.

2. Working in South Australia

If you are a skilled immigrant who is presently employed in your chosen occupation in South Australia, you may qualify for state nomination under this option. Candidates could include individuals with temporary visas, graduates from abroad, people applying as independent contractors, and subcontractors.

3. Outer South Australian Regions

You may qualify for certain work experience concessions under this stream if you are a skilled immigrant who significantly supports regional South Australian communities and enterprises. Working vacationers are also eligible to apply using this approach.

4. Permanent Residents

You can be qualified for state nomination through this stream if you have lived in South Australia for a long time, you don't meet the requirements for the other nomination streams, and you aren't actively employed in your nominated occupation. Holders of Safe Haven Enterprise visas are also eligible to apply through this route.

5. Highly talented and skilled

You can express interest in state nomination under this pathway if you are a highly skilled immigrant who can offer your demonstrated expertise and/or assist innovation in South Australia. Candidates could be skilled immigrants from overseas, South Australia, or other Australian states and territories.

6. Offshore

You may be chosen by South Australia and asked to submit an application for state nomination if you are a skilled immigrant who is currently residing abroad and who used the Commonwealth Government's Skill Select system to submit your Expression of Interest.
